TUÑÓN Y ALBORNOZ ARCHITECTS is an international architectural office based in Madrid. It originated in 2017 as a natural transition from Tuñón Architects and Mansilla+Tuñón. For over two decades, Emilio Tuñón (1959) together with Luis Mansilla (1959-2012) and Calos Martinez de Albornoz (1978) attracted critical acclaim and received numerous awards for built projects and competitions across Europe, North America and Asia.
Most of TUÑÓN Y ALBORNOZ ARCHITECTS’ work has been commissioned by means of competition, and it mainly comprises cultural projects that include many of the most prestigious and awarded museums in Spain. All of the projects are located in important historical contexts and show a very sensitive approach to the culture and climate of their setting, always paying special attention to the preexisting environment and urban values.
The quality of their designs has been recognized by some of the architecture’s most prestigious awards in Europe, such as the Mies Van der Rohe Award in 2007, for the M.U.S.A.C Museum of Contemporary Art in Leon, the National Award of Spanish Architecture in 2003 for the Auditorium in León, and in 2007 for the Royal Collections Museum. Moreover, in 2014 Emilio Tuñón was awarded with the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts by the Spanish Government and in 2022 the Spanish National Award of Architecture.
